William Shatner Discusses Why He Didn’t Attend Leonard Nimoy’s Funeral

The mystery of William Shatner missing from Leonard Nimoy’s funeral has finally been solved. Leonard Nimoy, Shatner’s co-star in the original Star Trek series, died suddenly in 2015 from what is assumed to be complications from chronic pulmonary disease (CPD) brought on by his heavy smoking habit during his life. He was hospitalized shortly before his death and passed comfortably in his home.
Star Trek fans all over the world questioned where William Shatner might be when the funeral came around, and Shatner explained it in his new documentary titled “Call Me Bill” - you can read the quote below, but the gist of it was that Nimoy’s death was so unexpected for the world and Shatner could not drop out of plans he made for a Red Cross Fundraiser on the other side of the country, the night before the funeral. In the end, Shatner thought that the fundraiser would do more good.

“When Leonard Nimoy died a few years ago, his funeral was on a Sunday. His death was very sudden, and I had obligated myself to go to Mar-a-Lago for a Red Cross fundraiser. I was one of the celebrities raising money. That event was on Saturday night. I chose to keep my promise and go to Mar-a-Lago instead of the funeral, and I said to the audience, ‘People ask about a legacy. There’s no legacy. Statues are torn down. Graveyards are ransacked. Headstones are knocked over. No one remembers anyone. Who remembers Danny Kaye or Cary Grant? They were great stars. But they’re gone and no one cares.’ But what does live on are good deeds. If you do a good deed, it reverberates to the end of time. It’s the butterfly effect thing. That’s why I have done this film.”
This is especially confusing, considering a few years back, Shatner stated that he would not be welcome at the funeral. It’s understood that Nimoy and Shatner were not speaking prior to his death, something familiar to a lot of the Star Trek cast members. However, post-funeral, Nimoy’s children had nothing but positive things to say regarding Shatner. There is no way of knowing which reason is correct other than taking Shatner’s word for it all.

However, that’s not to say he didn’t face backlash because he wasn’t there. Shatner most definitely did, but he states he is not bothered by that - in fact, he states, “I know what I did was right.” when questioned by his interviewer regarding said backlash.
Ultimately, William Shatner feels he made the correct choice, and the world lost a wonderful actor in Leonard Nimoy, and Shatner lost a friend.
