'Skeleton Crew' Episode 8 Spoiler-Free Review
One of the recurring themes in Star Wars is hope. That no matter how dark it may seem, there are always good people fighting, and there is always hope. The theme of hope describes the Skeleton Crew finale well.
The children are in a pickle since Jod threatened to kill them and their parents if they revealed his true intentions. They also were separated, on Jod’s orders, and watched by droids. At this point, Jod is ruled by greed. This is what costs him everything. All he can think about is the credits. He holds Fern and her mother hostage after they go to visit the Superintendent. He manages to bring his ship down and start an invasion. All seem hopeless once the pirates start invading, but the kids being kids know better than to give up. They devise a plan that they hope will work, and each has a part to play to achieve it. I don’t want to spoil too much, but let’s just say the power of friendship won tonight.

I loved seeing the universe from the perspective of children. No matter what the adults in their lives say about the universe around them, they know the truth. Even in the worst places, there are good people. While things seemed grim, they always held on to that spark of hope that their plan would work, and they would win. It was great to see them all come together in the end, to stop Jod, and these pirates, from destroying their planets. They each have their skills, and while they may be sheltered, that didn’t deter them from taking a stand.
It’s time to praise the kids in the show. They went from being sheltered children, who were on friendly terms with each other, to a found family. While they didn’t always get along, they were able to put their differences aside and reach their common goal. Wim went from idolizing the Jedi to losing hope in their plan, to now idolizing the New Republic. Neel was scared, and timid when it came to doing something he wasn’t used to, but now he doesn’t hesitate to help his friends and his planet. KB thought her disability would hold her back, and deny her friends, but instead she was able to prove everyone wrong, and help save the day. And then there's Fern. She’s headstrong and would butt heads with Wim, but in the end, they were able to rise up against Jod together. It was great to see how much they grew through eight episodes.
Even though there were no “official” Jedi, this show still felt like Star Wars. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Jedi and their stories, but sometimes it’s nice to see another side of the universe, and that's exactly what this show gave us. It had all the action, the emotion, the hope, and found family, something that is very familiar when it comes to Star Wars. It’s a great show and transported me back to the first time I saw the movie.
Skeleton Crew was incredible. While it did have a satisfying conclusion, I do want more. It would be cool to see what happens to these kids, and their planet, next. How do they rebuild? How are they integrated into the New Republic? There are so many questions that could be explored. Also, the final credits were absolutely gorgeous and can’t be missed. Skeleton Crew has been a wonderful addition to the Star Wars universe, and I hope we get to see these characters again.
