Everything We Know About Universal’s Monster Movie Remakes

Universal Monsters

Universal has been working hard to reignite the fear that their monsters used to create. When films like Dracula, The Mummy, The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon were first released, audiences were terrified, but they also couldn’t get enough of these monsters. Unfortunately, there are many horror fans today who have never seen a single one of these classic films, and while Universal has been trying its best to bring these classic monsters to new audiences, they haven’t been doing a very good job.

Most of their attempts at remaking these classic films have failed, but they saw their luck change with 2020’s The Invisible Man starring Elisabeth Moss, which saw amazing reviews from fans and critics. After the announcement of their new Dark Universe that will be included in Universal’s Epic Universe and the release of the trailer for the upcoming remake of The Wolfman, fans are finally interested in revisiting these monsters of the past. Thankfully, Universal already has multiple films in the works, so let’s take a look at a few of the upcoming projects!

This is the project that I am personally the most excited about. James Wan is directing and producing the film with Atomic Monster. The film will be written by Sean Tretta, and Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Judson Scott will act as executive producers. There is no word yet on casting or an expected release date. The film is said to follow the original film closely but will add “visceral horror”, making this film far scarier than the original.

Dracula

There have been a few Dracula films recently that I really liked but were unfortunately not hits at the box office. Renfield and The Last Voyage of the Demeter were both released in 2023 and followed different aspects of the villainous vampire. This new take on the character will be written and directed by Chloé Zhao, who is going to add a never-before-seen twist to the ancient character. Her adaptation is said to be a sci-fi western where vampires are seen as “the “others” in society”. I love a good vampire film, so I am excited to see how this turns out. There is no word yet on casting or a possible release date.

I hated this film so much, so I am really hoping that one of these upcoming films does the character justice. There are currently two projects in the works for this character from different studios. The first project is from Universal and will be written by David Koepp, who has said that this project was inspired by The Invisible Man (2020) and is a “twisted little number”. The second project is from Warner Bros. and will be directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. The film is currently titled Bride! and will star Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley. There is no word yet on when these films will be released, but I am excited to see a woman’s take on this character.

I have a love-hate relationship with this film. I love the story behind how Mary Shelley wrote it, but the film is just mean and not one that I would recommend to anyone. I am excited about this new project, though, because it is being written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, who has been working on it for more than a decade. He has said that this is his favorite novel, so I am excited to see his take. The film will star Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Lars Mikkelsen, and Christoph Waltz. According to Netflix, the film is currently in production and will be released on the streaming platform. There is no word yet on a release date.
