Summer Game Fest has come and gone, and one of the huge highlights from the presentation and the showroom floor was Sonic X Shadow Generations. The game was available to play on the showroom floor, and that’s exactly what many attendees did. Here are some of the first impressions of Sonic X Shadow Generations from the showroom floor.

A huge focus for many attendees was the gameplay of the Shadow-centric campaign. Many praised the large and complex level design on display. The gameplay appears to expand on the boost style seen in 2011’s Sonic Generations and gives it a slightly more open feeling. Some, however, have criticized the stage as seen in the demo, claiming it to be more similar to the 2017 title, Sonic Forces. This opinion was shared by YouTuber Matthasnocuts:

However, this was met with immediate backlash, with many pointing out that the stage as seen in the demo was not as linear as the stages in Sonic Forces, while others pointed out that the level in the demo was most likely the tutorial level. Despite this, people seemed generally pleased with the gameplay and even praised the seamless transitions from cutscenes back to gameplay.

Regarding the dialogue, fans praised Kirk Thornton's performance as Shadow, with many saying it is his best yet. Fans have also speculated as to whether or not SEGA got the original English voice of Shadow the Hedgehog villain Black Doom, Sean Schemmel (most famously known for voicing Son Goku in the Dragon Ball franchise) back to reprise his role. Schemmel stated that he did reaudition for the character but does not recall recording for the game. Another highlight of the in-game dialogue would be how it is written. Ian Flynn returns to write for the title, and fans definitely like what they have seen so far. Lastly, the boss battle against the Biolizard was also praised for its challenge and its phases. Overall, most fans seem fairly excited about the Shadow side of Sonic X Shadow Generations, though probably none are as excited as Fadel (aka GamesCage):

The Sonic Generations side of things seemed pretty standard and expected for what it is. One highlight of this half is the addition of the drop dash from Sonic Mania in both Modern and Classic Sonic’s gameplay. The controls are carried over from Sonic Frontiers rather than using the same control layout from the original Sonic Generations. Graphically, attendees said it looked rather bright and crisp.

There are also Chao (the cute A-life from the Sonic Adventure series) in the level that can be rescued and pretty much act like collectibles, at least from what was shown off so far. The lives system is also done away with. One aspect that was criticized was the seemingly non-upscaled textures, but most fans saw this as a minor issue. Overall, while not as grand or “flashy” as the Shadow portion, it still stands on its own alongside it as a good remaster of a classic title.

Sonic X Shadow Generations has gotten a warm welcome at Summer Game Fest and beyond, with many looking forward to the title. Though there are some criticisms regarding the combat in the Shadow section and elements of the presentation of the Sonic Generations, the overall sentiment regarding the upcoming title is mostly positive. Sonic X Shadow Generations speeds onto all major platforms on October 25th.
