Overtaking Himself, 'Sonic The Hedgehog 3' Becomes North America's Second Highest-Grossing Video Game Movie Of All Time
Released on December 19th, 2024, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has enjoyed significant success within a month of its release. The film also recently crossed some notable milestones!
The video game movie adaptation just cleared $204 million domestically, defeating the original Sonic film which sits at $146 million, and defeating Sonic The Hedgehog 2’s $190 million which previously held second place. Meanwhile, the global total for the third film sits at $384 million, another impressive number.
Second on the chart of highest-grossing video game adaptation films, Sonic 3 ironically plays second fiddle to Sonic’s main video game competitor from years past, Mario, thanks to the insane gross of $574 million domestic and $1.3 billion worldwide for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This enormous sum will be very difficult for any upcoming video game movies to beat, though A Minecraft Movie, the sequel to Super Marios Bros. or perhaps even the film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda franchise may succeed in that endeavor.
Despite this comparison against Mario’s success, the continued growth of the Sonic brand on the big screen will surely keep Paramount, the stars, and creatives of this developing universe happy. Sonic 4 was already announced, and little wonder, especially if the blue blur keeps on collecting rings worldwide in the coming weeks the film stays in theatres.
