How Much Credit Does George Lucas Deserve For The Recent 'Star Wars' Resurgence?

When thinking about Star Wars the first person that comes to mind is George Lucas. Not only did he create the entire franchise, but he also gave us six incredible films and one of the best series of all time, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The next name that most fans think of is Dave Filoni because he was not only Lucas’ “padawan,” but he also gave us so much great content like Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Ahsoka, and Star Wars: Tales of the Empire. These two geniuses have created so much Star Wars content not to mention the many projects that they have consulted on, produced, and written episodes for. When thinking about who should get credit for the Star Wars resurgence that we have seen in the last few years, neither of these men deserves that credit. We have Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm and Jon Favreau to thank for that success.

It might be weird to think that someone other than Lucas or Filoni deserves credit for Star Wars’ current popularity, but when we look at the timeline it is clear. While much of the content that is so popular relates to Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, and the Clone Troopers, all of which were created by the dynamic duo, we would not have had access to this content if it weren’t for Disney. When Disney took over Star Wars, there were so many new resources that became available that never would have been with Lucasfilm. This is what has allowed for such shows as The Mandalorian, Andor, and Ahsoka which all required massive budgets, sets, and casts. If it weren’t for Disney, there is a very real chance that Star Wars would have fallen off and become something that very little if any new content was being made for. If it weren’t for Disney then the failure of the sequel trilogy would have most likely resulted in Lucasfilm taking a step back and not risking more loss of funds. With Disney, they can continue taking calculated risks due to their wealth and the fact that they can also make money from the franchise by putting characters and merch in their parks.

The biggest reason that we have seen a resurgence in Star Wars is because of Jon Favreau. I have been a Star Wars fan since I was a little girl and watched A New Hope when I was four years old. I have always loved Star Wars, but after the atrocity that was the sequel trilogy I stepped away from the franchise and all “new” content which included The Clone Wars and Rebels. I couldn’t imagine that anything other than the first six films could do the franchise justice, so they were all I watched – until I saw the first episode of The Mandalorian on Disney+. When I watched that episode, it felt like all of my love for Star Wars had been reignited, and I couldn’t wait to not only finish the season but to also check out all of the content that I had missed. Whether you love or hate seasons two and three of the show, there is no denying that season one was a masterpiece. The show was created by a Star Wars fan for Star Wars fans, and this show is why we have Ahsoka, Andor, The Acolyte, and more upcoming content. This show brought fans back to the franchise and showed Disney that we did want more content. There is no way to diminish the impact that both Lucas and Filoni had and continue to have on the franchise, but if we are looking for where to say thanks for what we have now, it is Favreau and Disney.

You can stream the Star Wars films and series on Disney+.
