How ‘Star Wars: The Bad Batch’ Adds To Dooku’s Downfall
Star Wars: The Bad Batch has officially premiered its second season. Kicking things off with the episodes “Spoils of War” and “Ruins of War,” the premiere follows the team of renegade clone troopers as they take on a new job: stealing Count Dooku’s war chest on Serenno. With the intention of buying their way out of harm’s way, the Bad Batch nearly makes off with all of the treasure being seized by the Imperial forces on the planet. However, due to complications, they end up having to leave Dooku’s riches behind. Though during the mission, they learn from a local Serennian named Romar that Dooku did not just take his riches from the Republic worlds he conquered, but from his own people as well.
This development is not only a good piece of world-building by showing how the Separatists exploited those within their own territories, but it also adds to how Dooku’s worldviews were twisted by the dark side. As seen in the Dooku shorts in Tales of the Jedi, Dooku as a Jedi Master was devoted to ridding the Republic and Jedi Order of political corruption. In “Justice,” Dooku nearly killed Senator Dagonet due to his neglect of his own people. In “Choices,” Dooku and Mace Windu’s investigation of a Jedi’s death led them to discover another corrupt Republic senator, and added to Dooku’s suspicion that the Jedi existed mainly to serve the rich and powerful. By the time of the “The Sith Lord,” Dooku had given up on the Jedi and Republic, choosing to join Darth Sidious in his mission to end the corrupt Republic.

By the time of the Clone Wars however, Dooku had begun to exploit his own people on Serenno the very same way as the corrupt senators he once vehemently opposed. Driven by his desire to fund the Republic’s destruction, Dooku had become the very thing he had once sworn to destroy, robbing the people of Serenno in the name of peace and order. This small yet important addition in The Bad Batch adds to the tragedy of Dooku’s story and further demonstrates the many ways that the dark side can turn you into the very thing you hate.
