‘Scott Pilgrim’ Panel Highlights From New York Comic Con

The Scott Pilgrim movie came out in 2010. It’s easily one of the best comic book movies ever made, as it stayed close to the source material, and didn’t alter it too much. However, a new anime, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, is coming to Netflix on November 17th. This weekend at NYCC, I had the opportunity to attend a panel and learn more about the show through exclusive clips, and from the creators themselves.
During the panel, fans were given exclusive access to different clips from the upcoming series. The first was the official trailer, now released to the public. From the full-length trailer, it looks like this show is going to be great. We got to see more of the characters, and it featured the names of the cast as well. The animation is absolutely beautiful and really has that comic-book feel to it. Another treat was seeing the opening credits. The music is by Anamanaguchi, who did the music for the Scott Pilgrim video game. They are able to capture the spirit of Scott Pilgrim and give it that anime feeling. Lastly, we were also treated to a clip from the show. Without giving too much away, it dealt with two of the seven Evil Exes. They were in a secret lair, with the villain surrounded by many many computer screens. They want to ruin Scott’s relationship with Ramona, and as we know, Scott has to defeat seven of them to be able to date her.

The panel included Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski. The two of them discussed the upcoming Scott Pilgrim anime on Netflix. The original movie cast will be reprising their roles in the anime, and Bryan and BenDavid said it wasn’t that difficult to get the original cast back. When the movie was released in 2010 many of these actors didn’t have the major roles they now have. The two of them said the cast had a fun time making the movie, and it holds a special place in their hearts. The only difficult part was getting them to record their voice lines between filming for other roles. The two of them also said that while the movie was close to perfection, there was a lot they left out and a lot they couldn’t include in it. The anime seems to be close to the comics, but Bryan also said they have given more time to the Evil Exes, unlike the movie. Bryan and BenDavid also teased that there will be some surprises throughout the new series.
As a huge Scott Pilgrim fan, I am super grateful that I got to attend this panel at New York Comic Con. It was interesting to hear the creators talk and to learn more about the show. Seeing the full-length trailer, and the opening credits has me hyped for the new series.
