Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2, episode 5 teased a tantalizing new area for Star Wars to explore. The episode is titled ‘Entombed.’ It finds the Bad Batch on a treasure-hunting mission, at the insistence of Omega, with Cid’s friend, the pirate Phee. They are looking for a place called Skara Nal on a planet in the Kaldar Trinary System. Skara Nal, legend has it, contains a treasure known as “The Heart of the Mountain.” According to Phee, every pirate knows the legend and says that the treasure is priceless.

During their search, Tech comments on how old the marking on the mountain walls is. Phee responds by saying that the Heart of the Mountain is a treasure from the Ancients. The Bad Batch has never heard of the Ancients. Echo guesses that Phee means the Jedi, but Phee says no. They are older, much older, than the Jedi. According to Ben Kenobi, the Jedi have been around for 1,000 generations, approximately 25,000 years. That means that the Ancients really are ancient.

‘Entombed’ doesn’t fill in much detail about the Ancients. However, we can speculate that they were fighting some in a war before the Jedi and the Sith came to the fore. When the Bad Batch finds the Heart of the Mountain and Phee removes it, it activates a giant war machine. This is a four-legged droid with a powerful laser that razes the area it strikes. The Bad Batch finally disables and destroys the robot by replacing the Heart of the Mountain.

We can gather from this that the Ancients had an enemy and fought at least one war. The Heart of the Mountain also appears to be a Kyber crystal or some variation thereof. That would mean that the Ancients had a connection to the Force. There’s no telling what that connection was. It could have been Jedi or Sith-like powers or something entirely different. Aside from that, there is nothing we can say about the Ancients. They were ancient, had a need for weapons, and had a connection with the Force.

Star Wars has never explored a time before the Jedi, even in Legends. The little tidbit dropped by Phee opens a whole host of storytelling possibilities. They could tell some stories from the time of the Ancients. That could be fascinating and a way to give Star Wars a new look and feel. They could also explore more pirate legends. An Indiana Jones-style treasure hunter could be a fun spin-off from The Bad Batch.
