Where’s The Ghost Crew During ‘Star Wars: Andor’?

Andor, the prequel series to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has been a smash hit within and outside the fandom. With a grounded tone and focus on the early days of the Rebel Alliance, Andor has received acclaim for tackling aspects of the galaxy far, far away that have only been touched on in previous television series and movies. In addition, we see Cassian Andor’s backstory, as well as the more corporate aspects of the Galactic Empire, fleshed out on screen. A lot of this depth is thanks to the timeframe in which the series is set. Season 1 of Andor takes place five years prior to the events of Rogue One. This also puts the season during the same time as Season 1 of Star Wars Rebels. The animated series followed a small team of rebels aboard a ship called the Ghost. Consisting of Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus, Sabine Wren, Zeb Orrellios, Hera Syndulla, and C1-10P “Chopper,” the Ghost crew began their rebel activities on Ezra’s home planet of Lothal before expanding to the rest of the galaxy and aiding the growing Rebel Alliance. So with the first seasons of each series taking place in the same year, one can’t help but think about where the Ghost crew is throughout Andor’s early episodes.

The first season of Rebels takes place primarily on Lothal, with the Ghost crew running into the Force-sensitive Ezra and bringing him into their fight against the Imperial occupation of the planet. Ezra is also taught in the ways of the Jedi by Kanan, formerly Caleb Dume, who survived Order 66 and has been fighting alongside Hera and her team for the last six years. Throughout Season 1, the Ghost crew takes on a number of missions in opposition to the Empire. Among them are the freeing of Wookiee slaves on Kessel, the return of C-3PO and R2-D2 to Bail Organa, the infiltration of an Imperial academy, the sabotage of an Empire Day parade, and the broadcasting of a Rebellion message from one of Lothal’s communications towers.

The Andor episode “Announcement” seems to imply that the heist on Aldhani was the event that motivated the Empire to begin seriously cracking down on rebel activity. Rebels’ pilot episode “Spark of Rebellion” has a Star Destroyer arriving at Lothal and hovering over Ezra’s home. As such, one could guess that the increased Imperial presence on Lothal was a direct response to the heist on Aldhani. This would put “Spark of Rebellion” roughly in the same timeframe as “Announcement,” meaning the events of Rebels beyond “Spark of Rebellion” have yet to occur.

This could mean that at roughly the same time that Cassian is planning to break out of the prison on Narkina 5, the Ghost crew has just brought Ezra into their team and begun their rebel activities on Lothal. Could we possibly see a bit of crossover occur between the first seasons of each series? Only time will tell ultimately. Personally, I would love to see word of the Ghost crew’s activities spread so far that they even reach Cassian. I would even be willing to bet that we could hear Ezra’s broadcasted message from Lothal at one point in Andor. I won’t get ahead of myself, but with serious rebel activity occurring so close to one another in the same year, I think it is quite likely that Cassian could catch a glimpse of the fire across the galaxy.
