Wullf Yularen : Hero, Villain, Or Something In Between?

Many Star Wars fans are familiar with the name Admiral Wullf Yularen. With significant appearances in TV shows, books, comics, and even in the original trilogy, Yularen is a man who has risen through the ranks and worn many different uniforms in his long and illustrious career. However, should Wullf Yularen be remembered as a Republic war hero who was key in hunting down General Grievous’ Malevolence? Was he a proto-Imperial colleague of Wilhuf Tarkin who was part of the prosecution against Ahsoka Tano? Or was he an outright villain as the head of the feared Imperial Security Bureau and stalwart ally of Imperials like Grand Admiral Thrawn, and deserving of his place at the table on the Death Star Itself? Maybe history made fools of us all?

Yularen did his duty and served in the Republic Navy. He was the youngest member of the corps to achieve the rank of admiral, and would make it to fleet admiral. Yularen was partnered (with varying levels of happiness) with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker on numerous mercy missions. Towards the end of the Clone Wars, Yularen was still a key player in many victories, and was responsible for saving a few battles from becoming total routs.

However, after Palpatine’s ascension, he became head of the Empire’s secret police and presided over a totalitarian regime of murder, terror, and violence. Pretty hard to come back from that one, even if you have been indoctrinated into believing you are on the side of the angels. Yularen eventually became such a pivotal figure in the Empire’s power structure, that he was a member of the high council on the Death Star along with Darth Vader, General Tagge, and Grand Moff Tarkin.

It is difficult to judge people after the fact, even fictional characters. However, it is clear that Wullf Yularen was a brave man, a keen strategist, a cunning warrior, and a man who dedicated his life to the causes he believed in. That deserves respect.
