The Significance Of Anto Kreegyr And The Separatists In 'Star Wars: Andor’

In Episode 8 of Star Wars: Andor, Luther name-drops an original character Anto Kreegyr. Luther tries to convince the extremist rebel leader Saw Gerrera to meet with Kreegyr, but Saw dismisses him as slow and stupid and a Separatist. Saw was the leader of a rebel group known as the Partisans, who committed what some saw as terrorism in their fight against the Empire. Saw and his Partisans fought against the Separatists in the Clone Wars, which causes him to hesitate when Luthen brings up Anto’s name.

In the Star Wars prequels, the Separatists were fed up with high taxes and government corruption in the Galactic Republic combined with a feeling of being neglected, so they began a secession movement. Guided by Count Dooku, the Separatists launched the Clone Wars. During this conflict, the galaxy was split into three factions. The Jedi took the side of the Republic under the leadership of Sheev Palpatine while the Sith supported the Separatists. A handful of planets remained neutral and formed an alliance known as the Council of Neutral Systems. Both the Separatists and the Republic tried to persuade the neutral systems to join their cause. The Separatist conflict ended with the Clone Wars and the rise of the Galactic Empire.

The Empire absorbed the Separatist Council promising not to be the enemy but hunted down any Separatist holdouts. Anto Kreeger is one such holdout. Andor takes place in the year 5 BBY, five years before the events of Rogue One. Kreegyr has a plan to raid the Imperial Power Station on Spellhaus. In Episode 9, one of Anto’s pilots is captured by the Imperial Security Bureau and reveals all the details about the Spellhaus operation. Luthen tries to recruit Saw to Anto’s mission, but Anto is too extreme for Saw’s standards. Little else is known about Anto at this point, but his Spellhaus mission is shaping up to be a key moment in Cassian’s journey to join the rebellion.
