This Is Why Plazir-15 Feels So Different From Any Other Planet In 'Star Wars'

The Star Wars galaxy gets bigger and bigger each year as new planets and aliens are introduced with each new show and season. Furthermore, the planets we already know of and the people that occupy them get fleshed out more and more as we go on.

This season on The Mandalorian, Din, Grogu, and Bo-Katan have gone to a new Mandalorian covert on a yet unnamed world reminiscent of the American southwest. Two weeks ago, they took viewers to the planet of Plazir-15, a lush planet that seems relatively flat, the people (for some reason) live in domed cities. An odd choice given the verdant nature of the planet, but Star Wars will be Star Wars.

Plazir-15, however, is strikingly different from the other planets we’ve visited in the Star Wars universe. It’s environmentally beautiful, technologically advanced, and peaceful. Upon reflection, there doesn’t seem to be a planet quite like it in any Star Wars movie, show, or comic yet. From Coruscant and Ord Mantell to Geonosis and Dathomir, there always seems to be some sort of dystopian characteristic of the planet. And yet, Plazir-15’s only issue is a disgruntled security chief’s use of Nano droids that cause the refurbished battle droids to go haywire.

This is all due to the characteristic the show throws in almost offhanded.

Plazir-15 is the “galaxy’s only remaining direct democracy.” Furthermore, all manual labor is done by droids, freeing up the residents from having to do anything that people today would consider “normal work.” Couple that with the New Republic’s Amnesty Program, and you have a veritable democratic socialist paradise.

It really is all of that working together that makes for Plazir-15’s paradise-like atmosphere and vibrancy. It’s a dream of many modern people in our reality. Without the need to work to survive, people are free to pursue whatever interests they want. There are some who would think this could only produce laziness and apathy, but there’s no evidence to suggest that would even happen in reality. Evidence instead suggests that given that freedom, art, culture, language and all the things that make a society great and unique would flourish.

All matters of political decision making is handled through direct citizen input, and leadership has been democratically elected. This is due in large part to the charter the citizens of Plazir-15 signed with the New Republic. They must be pacifist and also pluralist. It would be naïve to think that such a paradise could exist among such a violent and dystopian galaxy, but using their wealth, they’ve hired out protection. Even still, people have designs, but really, whatever designs there may be to take over or exploit Plazir-15, the net result would only be negative as they’re currently prosperous in the model they employ. Any disruption to that would not bring more prosperity but rather decline.

The pluralist aspect makes a lot of this possible. Insular, homogeneous communities are often distrustful of what they would label the “other.” This leads to prejudice, discrimination, and ultimately hostility. Exposure to people of different cultures and race makes one more open minded, accepting, and intelligent, having been introduced to new perspectives, ways of thinking, and ideas. It is a strength, not a weakness.

Interestingly, when you really think about it, Plazir-15 is the most Star Trek world in the Star Wars galaxy. It’s utopian and Star Wars could use more planets like it. And it’s a sign of we could achieve in our reality if we had but the gumption to dream.
