Delicious in Dungeon is one of the many incredible anime that Netflix now has under their belt. The streaming giant has been doing an incredible job of creating anime based on lesser-known manga series and bringing anime favorites to live-action. Delicious in Dungeon is not only one of the most original anime that has come out in recent years, but it also brings together anime, food, and Dungeons & Dragons.

WARNING!! CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR DELICIOUS IN DUNGEON SEASON ONE!!

Delicious in Dungeon is based on the manga series Dungeon Meshi (Dungeon Meal) that was written and illustrated by Ryoko Kui. The manga ran from February 2014 to September 2023 and has been compiled into 14 volumes. The series follows a group of explorers who are venturing back into the dungeon after one of their party members was eaten by the Red Dragon. They are on a time crunch though because they only have until the dragon digests their party member to find the dragon, kill it, and rescue her from its digestive tract. Unfortunately, the three-member group has no money, no food, and no idea how they are going to make it to the lower levels of the dungeon. Their leader, Laios, suggests that they eat the dungeon monsters they find, but his fellow group mates Marcille, the half-elven Mage, and Chilchuck, the half-foot locksmith, are less than enthusiastic. While attempting to prep a walking mushroom monster they have captured, they meet Senshi, a dwarf warrior who is also an incredible chef. His specialty is cooking monsters and vegetation that can be found within the dungeon. Together the group of four slowly make their way through the perilous levels of the dungeon.

One of the most unique things about this anime is the fact that we have four main characters rather than one main character and three side characters. Each of the members of the group have a backstory that is explained by the final episode, and they share screen time fairly evenly. Fantasy and dungeons are nothing new for anime, but what Delicious in Dungeon does differently is that it focuses on the smaller details more than the big stuff which makes it feel like they are playing D&D. The characters have to face consequences for each of their actions, and it embraces the chaos of how difficult it can be to get a group of people on exactly the same page all the time. We have slowly been getting more anime about food, but they still are few and far between which is another reason why this show is so special. As a food-lover, my favorite thing about this show is the fact that it dives into the importance of food. They discuss the importance of nutrition, but Senshi also teaches the group how to treat each ingredient to make sure that it tastes as good as possible. There is so much love shown to each ingredient, and that is something that we don’t see very much in anime.

Delicious in Dungeon brings so much heart to every episode, and even when the characters are making choices that you know they shouldn’t, you aren’t mad at them. You know that every choice is made for a reason, and they wouldn’t do it if they didn’t have to. The series also treats every single monster and side character with respect. We learn about the monster’s origins, why they are living in the dungeon, and what makes each one unique. The side characters are pivotal to the story and are given backstories, so you get to know them almost as much as you know the core four. There is so much to love about this series, and I really hope that everyone will give it a try before season two comes out!

Delicious in Dungeon is available to stream on Netflix.
