After Laying Off Some 'Marvel Rivals' Devs, NetEase Planning More Closings

Following the recent news of Western developers for Marvel Rivals being laid off, a report from Game File suggests much more is on the way.

They claim to have two anonymous sources close to NetEase who understand the company’s operations and structure and who say that the Chinese company is going to sell off their stakes in many foreign game studios alongside the entirety of their acquired foreign studios. This would impact companies like Grasshopper Manufacture and Quantic Dream, with many of the affected studios having projects underway.

Why exactly this is happening is unclear, and when asked for comment by Game File, NetEase gave a neutral statement noting how all of their studios and projects are under constant review and evaluation, with NetEase making changes based on that internal process.

If funding or stakes are pulled, some games and studios will be less impacted than others, though. For instance, Rebel Wolves, made up of former developers from The Witcher 3, only has a small investment by NetEase, with the Japanese company Bandai Namco serving as the studio’s publisher. Rebel Wolves’ recently revealed game, Blood of the Dawnwalker, is thus likely to survive if NetEase divests themselves of their position in the company.

But other studios are unfortunately in a much worse place, and more news regarding layoffs, closures, or studio sales is likely to come in future months.
