On the eve of New York Comic Con again opening to hundreds of thousands of fans descending on the Javits Center in Manhattan, and hours before the world premiere of  of Award-winning director Adam Schomer’s four-part limited documentary series Selling Superman, the film’s star and subject announces a powerful donation to The Hero Initiative!

Selling Superman is the powerful and emotional story of one man’s lifelong secret, his obsession with comic books and collecting, amassing over 300,000 comic books, alongside toys, cards and other other pop culture ephemera.

Darren Watts' life was changed forever when he uncovered a 40-year-old secret that his father had hidden—his father, who lived with Asperger’s (ASD), obsessive need to collect, amassing over 300,000 comic books. While the collection includes one of the most sought-after comics ever printed, a rare Superman #1 (graded 7.0) valued at over $3.5 million, the toll it took on the family was profound. The obsession overtook their home, fractured relationships, and created deep emotional scars. Selling Superman follows Darren and his long-time friend and comic book enthusiast Brian, as they traverse the convention and auction scene, confronted with the prospect of selling his father’s legacy while wading through the deep-seated emotional turmoil of his past.

This key issue features a stunning cover by Jack Kirby, and introduces Agent Sharon Carter by name for the first time.

“One of the most rewarding parts of this journey has been the opportunity to share this vast collection with not only the comic book community, but to find ways to give back through donations of some of these sought after collectibles” says Darren Watts. “The work of organizations like the The Hero Initiative is important to the future of this medium my father loved so much.”

The Hero Initiative creates a financial safety net for comic creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work.
