With the election of Donald Trump to a second term, many companies are rolling back DEI programs. Now Disney has followed suit. The company sent out an announcement to its employees highlighting the changes and the new focus. As part of the changes, Disney is ending its Reimagine Tomorrow Initiative, focused on talent from underrepresented communities. The initiative was challenged by conservatives who attempted to sue the company for violating the 1964 Civil Rights Act, accusing them of illegal sex, race, and national origin discrimination. Disney also announced that its “Diversity & Inclusion” performance factor, which determines compensation for executives, will be updated to a “Talent Strategy.” The new strategy will incorporate some elements from the previous one but will focus on how values drive success in business.
Other changes include rebranding Disney’s Business Employee Resource Groups to Belonging Employee Resource Groups. The change is intended to strengthen the employee community and workplace experience. Finally, the content disclaimer present before older films like Dumbo and Peter Pan has been changed from a warning about “negative depictions and/or mistreatment of peoples or cultures” to the statement, "This program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions.” In 2022, Bob Iger returned as CEO with the mission to entertain and leave a positive impact on the world.
