We remembered, shed tears, and made the 2017 Disney/Pixar film Coco an Academy Award-winning film with a memorable soundtrack and message of healing and remembering loved ones. With how high the bar was set for this film, creating a sequel would be a tall task. The subsequent journey of Miguel and his family will be seen on the big screen again. This momentous occasion not only quenches the thirst of a still loyal fan base, but it brings back memories of nostalgia as directors Lee Unkrich (who has returned to Pixar) and Adrian Molina will be on the front lines creating the Coco sequel.
According to Unkrich's Bluesky account, his return has been embraced by fans as well as the sequel. Commenters congratulated this return and expressed excitement about working with Molina once again. Scores of fans also brought up how difficult it could be to “hard to improve upon perfection” that was the first Coco film and inquiry about bringing back Miguel’s original voice actor.

Despite a final product being a ways from the future, a sequel to a film with an Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA Award, and Critic's Choice Music Award to name a few is not going to be an easy task. Pixar is no stranger to producing sequels for their stories—think Toy Story and The Incredibles—and their ability to create new stories without disrupting the overall arc of the franchise. Given the personal and dynamic story of Coco, a 2029 sequel has the potential to focus on Miguel as a grown-up while maintaining his connection to Héctor, Coco, and the Land of the Dead. Plot details are unknown, but 2029 will be an exciting year for Disney/Pixar fans.
