Gary Oldman Gets Personal About Raising His Sons And Thanks Two Franchises

Drew Barrymore and Gary Oldman

Gary Oldman opened up about the difficulties of balancing his work and raising children in a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. Oldman has sole custody of two of his children, from his failed marriage to Donya Fiorentino. He admitted that he has been forced to turn down plum roles due to shoots in places like Budapest and Prague.

Gary Oldman is now happily settled with writer Gisele Schmidt, who has brought a son of her own into the family. But back in the early 2000s, he states that he was very much a single father. Accessible acting jobs were drying up, but then he hit on two major castings that jump-started his career, The Dark Knight and Harry Potter. He credits them for keeping him in the industry.

Shoots for the two movies still required him to frequently fly back and forth between London and LA with only a few days in each locale.  Just so he could be there for his children. He says on the show:

“Thank God for ‘Harry Potter.’ I tell you, the two — ‘Batman’ and ‘Harry Potter’ — really, they saved me, because it meant that I could do the least amount of work for the most amount of money and then be home with the kids.”

Gary Oldman has had several successful roles in the last few years, including his Oscar-worthy performance as Churchill in Darkest Hour. This was also filmed in this native United Kingdom. It seems that his home turf gets the best out of him.
