Redemption is one of the major themes of Star Wars, but can someone who – according to Disney – has fallen to the dark side in our galaxy, be brought back to the light?

In February 2021, Lucasfilm announced that they had no plans to hire Gina Carano for future projects after the former MMA athlete made several social media posts comparing the treatment of conservatives in the US to that of the Jews during the Holocaust.

Three years later, Carano filed a lawsuit against Disney, seeking damages of at least $75,000 and a court order for Lucasfilm to hire her again. A case like this, with a former employee suing her former employer for being penalized for exercising her freedom of speech, is a novelty, and the outcome could set a precedence far beyond Hollywood.

Despite this legal action, the actress recently told the audience of FAN EXPO in Philadelphia that she has no ill will towards Disney or Lucasfilm, and would be happy to return to do more Star Wars. She only shared the posts in 2021 to let people know what was going on.

Carano was last seen as the former Alderaanian shocktrooper and later ranger Cara Dune in the season two finale of The Mandalorian, and was set to have a major role in the (now canceled) TV show Rangers of the New Republic.

The chances of Dune to ever reappear in another Star Wars project are slim at best.

In April 2024, Disney’s lawyers reacted to the complaint by claiming First Amendment rights and calling for the suit to be thrown out. They argue that the studio is entitled to protect its own creative speech from association with Carano’s views, and that the actress was never hired to reprise her role in season three of The Mandalorian or Rangers of the New Republic, so the claim, that she was “fired” is simply false.

All this doesn’t look like an amicable agreement is on the horizon, and even if Carano and Lucasfilm/Disney can settle the case, there aren’t too many opportunities for Cara Dune to return to the galaxy far, far away. With Disney focusing on feature films and cutting back on new Disney+ shows, the only viable options right now could be Jon Favreau’s Mandalorian and Grogu movie or Dave Filoni’s culmination film of the Mandoverse. To be fair, the good guys could surely use the abilities of Cara Dune against Grand Admiral Thrawn and his forces.

So, who knows, there might be redemption after all…
