The Mobile Suit Gundam Franchise, first established in 1979 by the eponymous Japanese animated science-fiction/drama television series, Mobile Suit Gundam (1979-1980) has spawned numerous imitators, adaptations, spin-off television series, films, movies, and manga and has become popular among global audiences, not unlike the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises here in the United States. Nearly 46 years after the release of the original series, the franchise is still producing new content, including a new Gundam film, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning, which will also be released to North American audiences.

The original Mobile Suit Gundam series revolutionized the robot genre by showing ordinary soldiers from opposing forces piloting “mobile suits” inspired by the 1959 science-fiction novel, Starship Troopers. The series also started a trend of animated series containing more mature themes and refusing to flinch from showing violence and its disastrous real-life consequences.

The series’ spin-offs have largely followed similar themes and storylines, including this latest film:

“Amate Yuzuriha is a high-school student living peacefully in a space colony floating in outer space. When she meets a war refugee named Nyaan, Amate is drawn into the illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle. Under the entry name ‘Machu,’ she throws herself into fierce battle day after day, piloting the GQuuuuuuX. Then an unidentified Gundam mobile suit pursued by both the space force and the police appears before her, along with its pilot, a boy named Shuji. Now their world is about to enter a new era.”

The film boasts incredible talent, including Director Kazuya Tsurumaki (Neon Genesis Evangelion). Yoji Enokido (Revolutionary Girl Utena) is the film’s screenwriter, joined by Hideaki Anno for the screenplay. Illustrator Take (Katanagatari, Zaregoto) is the character designer, and Ikuto Yamashita (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Shin Kamen Rider) is the mechanical designer.

The film, which also serves as the setup for a new Mobile Suit Gundam series of the same name, was released theatrically in Japan on January 17, 2025, and will be released by GKids in North America on February 28, 2025. Release information for the upcoming series has not been made available yet.
