James Mangold Is Chasing The Feels With His Dawn Of The Jedi Era 'Star Wars' Movie

Star Wars lore can be frightening. With every film, TV show, book, comic, and video game sharing the same level of canon and new material being released monthly, chances are that a story you want to tell has either already been told or - even worse - contradicts the established lore.

To avoid these pitfalls, you better choose a remote part of the Star Wars universe or a completely unexplored period.

Like James Mangold has done.

RELATED:

Together with Beau Willimon, he is working on a Star Wars script that is set 25,000 years before the events of the films. Comics and books have covered this time period (tentatively called Dawn of the Jedi) in the former Expanded Universe, but it has only been hinted at in the Sequel Trilogy, with Luke Skywalker hiding on the planet of the very first Jedi.

Mangold, who had a huge hit with Logan and whose most recent film, the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, has just hit theatres, also gave a clear answer in a recent interview on why he chose to set his story such a long, long, long time ago in the far, far away galaxy:

"It's an area and a playground that I've always [wanted to explore] and that I was inspired by as a teenager. I'm not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it's almost immovable, and you can't please anybody. "

Mangold is a very versatile director, having worked on both smaller and more intimate films (like Girl, Interrupted) and big blockbusters like Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny. Not all of his films have been huge commercial successes and he is pragmatic enough to know that he can't force (no pun intended) the audience to like your works:

"Success is never guaranteed, but the reality is that the way to get most people to agree is to move them; to somehow find the humanity in a situation.[...] It's the feelings, it's "the feels," right? That truly defines how we feel about these movies and whether we care to visit them again."

Mangold's Star Wars film was originally announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023, but since then, it has been relatively quiet around the project, and no release date has been set.

But the upcoming Star Wars Celebration Japan in April will likely give an update on the state of cinematic Star Wars.
