After the announcement last year that horror master Mike Flanagan was working on a script for a live-action Clayface film, fans have been eagerly awaiting more news. It has officially been confirmed that Speak No Evil director James Watkins will be directing the upcoming film. Watkins is known for 2024’s Speak No Evil as well the Netflix sci-fi horror series Black Mirror. The Hollywood Reporter has reported that sources said Watkins met with DC co-chief James Gunn this past week where he pitched his vision for the film. Gunn gave him the nod of approval and officially attached the director to the film.

The film will be produced by The Batman director, Matt Reeves, along with Lynn Harris and DC Studio heads, Gunn and Safran. While there is no word yet on who will be cast in the film, Gunn and fellow DC boss Safran said that the actors who worked in DC animation projects would play the character in real-life. At the time of this article, Clayface has been portrayed by two different actors in animated projects. Alan Tudyk has voiced the character in the Harley Quinn series and Creature Commandos while Ron Perlman voiced the character in Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures.

The film is slated to be released September 11, 2026, and sources have said that the film will have a budget of $40 million. This take on the classic DC villain will be a horror film that follows a B-movie actor who injects himself with an unknown substance to help keep him relevant. He soon realizes that he can shape his face into almost any form and becomes a walking piece of clay. The film is expected to begin filming later this year.
