Krypto, Superman's Dog, Makes First Appearance
James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming Superman film is set to be the must-see cinematic event of next summer, and Gunn's recent reveal has only amplified the anticipation.
In a recent post to his X account (formerly Twitter), Gunn gave fans a sneak peek at a new character in the movie—Krypto, Superman’s loyal dog—this live-action version of Krypto, inspired by Gunn’s dog, Ozu.
Gunn shared the emotional backstory behind Ozu’s influence on the film, recounting how he adopted the dog from a hoarder who owned over 60 dogs. Initially, Ozu was destructive and distant, presenting significant challenges for Gunn and his family.

“He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture - he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ - and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the story's shape as Ozu changed my life,” Gunn shared on X.
Next summer's Superman film also boasts a star-studded cast. David Corenswet will play the iconic Last Son of Krypton, bringing a new portrayal of Superman to the big screen. Alongside him, Rachel Brosnahan will star as Lois Lane, Superman’s love interest, ensuring a dynamic and compelling duo.
The cast also includes Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, Isabella Merced, Edi Gathegi, and Anthony Carrigan.
Superman flies into theatres on July 11, 2025.
