New Rumor Claims Xbox's Next Generation Console Is Coming Next Year
People in the video game industry don’t talk about the Console Wars anymore. It seems to have become a thing of the past. They still track sales records, and by that metric, Sony is winning this generation, but with so much talk about cross-platform cross-play, and cloud-based gaming, is the battle between the console companies that big of a deal anymore?
Hell, recently, Xbox’s own Phil Spencer has talked openly about nothing being out of the question for Xbox games being released on Playstation or Nintendo systems, especially since their acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, the company behind Call of Duty and Warcraft. This has led to questions about whether Xbox will bother with consoles anymore. Spencer squashed those, saying they’re already working on the next generation and even a handheld.

Now, obviously, this is a rumor and is not substantiated yet. The leaker does have a track record and sources in the industry, but the timetable is really early. Most consoles are on a seven or eight-year life cycle. The Xbox 360 came out in 2005, and the successor, the Xbox One, came out in 2013. This generation came out in 2020. A six-year life cycle is definitely on the early end of the timeline, but with all the changes going on in the industry, who knows?
