The time has finally come!
After it was revealed that the original creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender had formed their own studio and signed on to work with Nickelodeon again, fans of the show have been eagerly awaiting any news that came out about what the studio was going to be doing. It was made known that the next animated show would be set after Korra’s time as Avatar, and that meant the next Avatar would be an earthbender, but that’s all that was known.
Until now.
Today, Nickelodeon confirmed that the new series is coming and provided some details.
First, the new title of the show will be Avatar: Seven Havens. It’s not entirely clear what the Seven Havens are, but per the press release, we have some clues. The world is devastated by a cataclysmic event that seems to have put humankind on the edge of extinction, with references to the new Avatar having to save the Seven Havens from civilization’s last strongholds collapse. This suggests that perhaps survivors of the cataclysm congregated into seven safe havens. People online seem to blame Korra for the devastation, but a close read of the release doesn’t exactly say that. It just suggests that people see the Avatar as a destroyer rather than a savior in this time.

Next, it’s now confirmed that the new Avatar will be a twin. Whether the twin-status means there are two Avatars is unclear, but it says the new Avatar has a long-lost twin, and together they have to save Seven Havens from the collapse of civilization. They are working together to figure out their “mysterious origins.”
Finally, the series will be at least two books long, with Book 1 comprising the first 13 episodes and Book 2 comprising the next 13. No release date was given, exactly, but with the studio’s first feature-length movie coming in January, it’s likely to follow sometime after that.
All this comes on the 20th anniversary of the show’s release. It’s an exciting time to be an ATLA fan.
