Pokmon is perhaps one of the biggest video game names in history, easily making its way into the top five of best-selling franchises ever. Since the original games launched back in 1996 on the Nintendo Game Boy, it has exploded into every conceivable consumer market.
Then, in 2016, it saw even bigger growth with the introduction of Pokémon GO, a mobile app that used GPS data to track player movement as they moved about the real world, prompted when there were Pokémon nearby, where they could tap on the screen and try to catch a Pokémon with augmented reality. It’s been a massive hit, with over 500 million downloads. It was sold to users as a way to get people up and moving while still playing games on their phones.
In reality, it was a means to map the world with real-time spatial data about the places people live in and move in. Created by Niantic, a company spun off from Google by co-founder John Hanke. They partnered with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company to create the game that took the world by storm.
Now it looks like they’re interested in selling. And the price tag is huge for a singular video game. The price tag, in a report by Bloomberg, puts the cost at upward of $3.5 billion. While it’s not just Pokémon GO but the whole gaming division of Niantic, it’s still a massive price tag for a development wing of a company. It’s supposedly being bought by Scopely Inc., a Saudi Arabian-owned company.
