While George Lucas no longer owns nor controls the Star Wars franchise, that does not mean he does not still pay attention to what is happening with the franchise he began in 1977. Lucas also has opinions about what he thinks about some of the Star Wars projects that have been released since he sold the franchise in 2012 to Disney and has shared them with their creators.

As reported by CEO Bob Iger, Lucas was disappointed by The Force Awakens, saying there were not enough visual or technical leaps forward. He was, however, more impressed with The Last Jedi, having told Rian Johnson that it was “beautifully made.” He also told Tony Gilroy that he enjoyed Rogue One and is watching and enjoying The Mandalorian according to Dave Filoni. He also is supportive of Solo, which was directed by his old friend, Ron Howard. He has yet to reveal his opinions on some Star Wars movies and series, including The Rise of Skywalker (whose premiere he did not attend), Ahsoka, and Andor, however, since he reportedly liked Rogue One, he likely enjoyed Andor as well, given that is centered around Cassian Andor, one of the central characters of Rogue One, and his background before joining the Rebellion.

So, which Disney-era Star Wars movie or series is his favorite? The answer, according to prominent Lucasfilm Story Group member, Pablo Hidalgo, is 2022’s Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series, primarily in the ways that he feels the series celebrates the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, for which he originally received considerable criticism upon the release of Episodes 1-3. According to Hidalgo:

“Early on, there was a conversation had with George about what his thoughts were and whether or not he bought the whole concept of taking Obi-Wan and Vader again. And he was a hundred percent supportive. And I’ve heard tell that it’s been one of his favorite things to come out of Star Wars, because he recognizes so much of what he did in the prequels basically brought forward and celebrated in a way that I’m sure surprised him.”

In recent years, Star Wars fans have begun re-evaluating the Prequel Trilogy and its legacy and the increasingly favorable attitude of many fans toward the Prequel Trilogy not only made possible the creation of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series (which was initially conceived as a standalone movie) but it also persuaded Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen to reprise their Prequel Trilogy roles as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, respectively, in the series.
