'Sonic Rumble' A 'Sonic' Mobile Game Has Been Announced
A new mobile title in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has been announced called Sonic Rumble. The game is going to be an up to 32-player battle royale similar to games such as Fall Guys. Each player controls a toy version of a character from Sonic’s universe in a race to see who is the fastest toy of them all. Unlike previous titles, this will not be developed in cooperation with SEGA Hardlight but rather with Rovio, the studio behind Angry Birds that SEGA recently acquired for $775 million. A trailer showing off the gameplay was posted on Sonic’s X feed. Confirmed playable characters include Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Dr. Eggman, Cream the Rabbit, Metal Sonic, Blaze the Cat, Silver the Hedgehog, Zavok, Vector the Crocodile. Charmy Bee, Espio the Chameleon, Rouge the Bat, Shadow the Hedgehog, Vector the Crocodile, and Jet the Hawk. These characters will also have custom accessories that can be used to customize the character.
Sonic Rumble is set to release on Android and iOS devices this Winter. However, a closed beta for players in the USA will take place from May 19th to the 24th. Reception to this recent announcement has been generally positive, but fans have noted that footage in the trailer does seem to suffer from framerate dips at times. Also, the public Discord server for the game has been widely criticized due to its poor and seemingly biased moderation. The server is currently closed for about a week (at the time of writing) to iron out moderation issues. Still, this seems like a bold step for the Sonic franchise, and it will be interesting to see Rovio’s take on the blue blur.
