Bandai Namco revealed some good news for Gundam fans. The company is partnering with Legendary to bring the live-action Mobile Suit: Gundam film to the big screen. The creators released a poster announcing that co-production of the film has begun and Jim Mickle will be directing. Mickle previously directed the Netflix series Sweet Tooth. Brian K. Vaughn, a famous comic book writer, is set to write the screenplay. The poster features a fiery figure flying around the edge of a planet and reads, “Co-production of the Gundam Live-Action Movie has begun.”
While the film was initially announced back in 2018, word has been quiet since then. The new announcement doesn’t offer much aside from confirming the film is still upcoming and announcing the change of directors from Jordan Voght-Roberts to Mickle. To help with production, Bandai Namco is opening a subsidiary in North America, called Bandai Namco Filmworks America, LLC. The two studios confirmed a plan to announce details as they are finalized. They explained further, “Mobile Suit Gundam, which began broadcasting in 1979, established the genre of 'real robot anime' that could not be described in terms of simple good and evil, which had been the trend of robot anime up to that point, with realistic depictions of war, detailed scientific examinations, and intricately interwoven human dramas that treated robots as 'weapons' called 'mobile suits,' and caused a huge boom.” No release date is set yet, but fans should keep a lookout for more details in the coming months.
