SAG-AFTRA And AMPTP Talks Concluded Monday, Set To Continue Wednesday
With the writer’s strike nearly wrapped up, SAG-AFTRA is hoping for a similar deal when talks resume on Wednesday, October 4. The actor’s guild met with Hollywood leaders on Monday, October 2, including Disney CEO Bob Iger and NBC Universal chairman and chief content officer Donna Langley. The full-day bargaining session was the first time that the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA met at the negotiations table since the strike started in mid-July. While the union is happy that the WGA is finally getting a fair deal, they were quick to warn that their concerns and demands are different.
According to SAG-AFTRA, wages, revenue sharing, and protections from AI have not been fully addressed by the studios. The union is also looking at health plan and pension contribution caps, the size of relocation expenses, and whether motion capture can be covered under the union’s contract. The guild’s negotiating committee encouraged the performers to stay strong, “Keep turning out in full force on our picket lines and at solidarity events around the country. Let the AMPTP hear your voices loud and clear. It makes a difference. YOU make a difference.”

Actress Travina Springer, who played Tyesha in Ms. Marvel, said, “It’s wonderful that the AMPTP has decided to come back to the table. I’m hopeful we will get a favorable resolution in the near future but I’m also very tired. And it feels a bit disrespectful that we even have to be here and that we are not getting our fair share in the first place.”
The WGA succeeded in gaining increases in minimum pay, bonuses for successful streaming shows, and limitations around the use of artificial intelligence. Actors claim they need more robust protections from AI as the technology could be used to place performers’ faces and voices in roles they never agreed to play. The main hope for Wednesday is that everyone can walk away from the table satisfied and performers and producers can get back to work doing what they love: creating interesting and inspiring content for audiences.
