Supermajority Of Workers For SEGA Of America Vote To Unionize
A supermajority of employees at SEGA of America has voted to unionize. The workers formed the union under the Communication Workers of America and are asking for management to voluntarily recognize the organization. They refer to themselves as Allied Employees Guild Improving SEGA (or AEGIS-CWA) and consist of 144 workers from various departments including brand marketing, games as a service, localization, marketing services, QA, product development, ops, and more. AEGIS-CWA has filed for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board, and this election will take place unless SEGA voluntarily recognizes them first. Their demands include higher base pay for all employees, improved stable benefits including healthcare, retirement, and remote work opportunities, balanced workloads and schedules with defined responsibilities for all positions, and adequate staffing “to end patterns of overwork.”
For these employees, working for SEGA is a passion and, as stated by QA and AEGIS member Mohammad Saman, “it’s been so exciting to see that through organizing, we can make this work a sustainable long-term career.” He continues, stating “By creating our union, AEGIS-CWA, we’ll have a say in the decisions that shape our working conditions and ensure the job security and working conditions we deserve. We’re excited to protect what already makes SEGA great, and help build an even stronger company, together.”

Workers at SEGA of America aren’t the only ones in the video game industry who have been organizing recently. Raven Software QA employees, Blizzard Albany employees at Activision Blizzard, and Zenimax at Microsoft have all been working to unionize. As opinions shift more positively toward unions, it seems we’ll be hearing about more organizations being formed within the games industry.
