Sometimes movie studios shift releases around, for any number of reasons, and the upcoming releases of Shrek 5 and Minions 3 are no exception.

Recently, Universal announced that they are shifting the release dates for the next two films in the franchises, essentially swapping their release dates. Shrek 5 will be delayed from a July 2026 release to a holiday release near the end of the year, supposedly coincident with the franchise's 25th anniversary. Minions 3 is moving up almost a full year from a June 2027 release to a July 2026 release, putting both movies into a six-month window of each other.

Both franchises have earned Universal nearly 7 billion dollars in their theatrical runs. Over the four movies that Shrek has been in, they have grossed over $2.5 billion and given rise to everything from theme park attractions to a Broadway musical, complete with Tony nominations. The fifth installment will see the return of the franchise's staples of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz. Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri will produce it.

In both their Despicable Me and Minions movies, the Minions have grossed almost $5 billion. The adorable and silly yellow beings that help Gru have become so mainstream in Universal films, that they appear at the beginning of the Illumination Entertainment logo in movies. The movie will be written by Brian Lynch and directed by Pierre Coffin, who also happens to provide the voices for the minions. It will also be produced by Meledandri and Bill Ryan.
