Tony Gilroy Steps Back From Producing Duties On 'Andor' Amidst Writer Strike
Tony Gilroy has come under critique lately after reports of the writer/producer still contributing to the second season of Andor. The scripts for the season are reportedly finished; however, it seemed that Gilroy was still present for the production tasks. Abdullah Saeed, also a writer and producer, called Gilroy out for this on his Instagram, stating that it is “scabbing behavior” in the face of the strike. Gilroy has actively denied his continued involvement in production.
The writer/producer cleared the air in the following statement given to The Hollywood Reporter:
“I discontinued all writing and writing-related work on Andor prior to midnight, May 1. After being briefed on the Saturday showrunner meeting, I informed Chris Keyser at the WGA on Sunday morning that I would also be ceasing all non-writing producing functions.”

According to THR, Keyser, the co-chair of the WGA’s negotiation efforts, corroborated Gilroy’s claimed conversation; Lucasfilm has withheld comment. Saeed has since thanked Gilroy for halting production as well, stating, “See you on the picket line!”
The accusations are relevant. Several companies affiliated with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, including Disney, sent out letters informing the showrunners who doubled as Writers Guild of America members that they had to continue non-WGA services. This includes casting, production duties, post-production duties, and related non-writing activities. Disney, in particular, stated the showrunners “are not excused from performing” their duties as showrunners; they are also committed to staying in production through the strike.
