Disney has officially cancelled the much-anticipated Tiana series in a bid to focus on theatrical content. The business strategy has declared long-form direct-to-streaming content null and void, so don’t expect to see any movies released directly onto Disney Plus soon. Proof of how committed Disney is to this new mode of thinking can be seen in their latest project. Moana 2 was originally produced as a series, but CEOs demanded its adaption to a theatrical release.

Tiana’s musical series has been on the slate since 2020, and original voice actor Anika Noni Rose had signed up to reprise her role, so many will be sad to see this cancelled for good. Disney has also stated that their new strategy will lead to approximately 300 job losses at the Vancouver Studios. It seems as if Disney is going into panic mode, despite Disney Plus turning a profit and the company growing yearly.

Disney annual gross profit for 2022 was $28.321B, a 27.07% increase from 2021. (Macrotrends)

With streaming services such as Prime Video and Netflix already having the edge over Disney Plus in regards to the amount of content they hold. How will Disney’s (and Pixar’s) stubbornness to avoid investing in new series affect their subscriber numbers? Particularly in an economy where families are cutting back. We’ll have to see.
