Movie and television projects can go from development limbo to project cancellation at the drop of a dime, and a new one has joined the list. Sarah J. Maas’s fantasy romance novel series, A Court of Thorns and Roses, is reportedly no longer being developed as a television series by Hulu and Disney. According to Variety, the author may shop the series pitch to other platforms towards the end of Summer 2025 once Disney’s rights expire.
A potential movie adaptation was first announced in 2017 and was later changed to a television adaptation in 2021 by Disney's 20th Television for Hulu. In 2023, an update was given to TVLine confirming that “It’s still in development,” by Ronald D. Moore, the show’s other creator. A year later, it was announced that Hulu had stopped actively developing the series but hadn’t made a move to cancel it or shop it to other studios.
