'Skeleton Crew' Episode 5 Spoiler-Free Review
Skeleton Crew episode 5 is appropriately titled “You Have A Lot To Learn About Pirates”, which raises the stakes for the kids. This episode revealed a lot and gave us more insight into who Jod actually is.
After the events of the last episode, SM-33 can remember his old Captain’s name- Tak Rennod. The name means nothing to the children, but the discovery thrills Jod. Rennod was the most infamous pirate in the galaxy, and he and his ship went missing during their hunt for the treasure on At Attin.
33 remembers the coordinates and takes them to Skull Ridge Mountain on the planet Lanupa, which has been turned into a fancy spa resort. It also holds Rennod’s treasure and coordinates to At Attin. The group splits up to find the vault. Of course, they’re not alone, and the bounty hunter recognizes Jod. This spells trouble for the group, who is now being pursued by his ex-fellow pirates. They can crack the code and get into the vault, where Jod shows his true colors to the children. The episode ends with the children separated from Jod, which is probably safer for their sake.
RELATED:
This episode has been one of the best so far. Jod is such an interesting character and can be added to the list of mysterious scoundrels. There is still much we do not know about him, but he did spend the episode trying to convince everyone around him that he is trustworthy. As we know, if someone keeps trying to convince you of that, then they’re probably not to be trusted. We also learn At Attin’s biggest secret and what treasure the planet contains. This episode was full of adventure and reminded me a lot of The Goonies and Indiana Jones.
Jude Law was the standout of this episode. We don’t know a lot about who Jod is and what his past is. He showed his true colors in this episode, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens to him and his relationship with the children. We also got to see Wim have a bit of a crisis. His entire life, he was itching for adventure, but now that he’s on it, it’s not everything it’s cracked up to be, and he misses his dad. Jod tries to help him, but his advice isn’t exactly comforting, which isn’t surprising considering what we know about him. However, Wim does get a moment to shine when he finds a lightsaber in the vault. He ignites it, and it goes about as well as you’d expect. Neel continues to be my favorite, but I am always a sucker for cute blue aliens in Star Wars (looking at you Max Rebo).
Skeleton Crew has been a welcome addition to the Star Wars franchise. It gives us a new story, away from what so many of us are familiar with, and tells it from children's perspective. It’s starting to ramp up, so I can’t wait to see where it goes.
Rating: 8/10
