Will 'Captain America: Brave New World' Work Without Steve Rogers?
As much as Avengers: Endgame was loved by almost everyone, it did some damage to the characters from the original Avengers crew. Although Hawkeye, Hulk, and Thor all came out alright at the end of the movie, Black Widow was killed partway through in an emotional scene, and Tony sacrificed himself at the film’s climax. Also, despite not being killed, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, aged himself while time traveling. Sim Wilson, who at the time was known as Falcon, was genuinely happy for his friend but was disappointed that now he had to live in a world without Captain America. Steve then handed Sam the shield, effectively handing him the mantle and title of Captain America.
The most prominent role the character has had since is being a title character in the Disney+ show Falcon and The Winter Soldier in 2021, where he features as the main protagonist, and his character arc is dedicated to him proving to himself that he is capable of that title. The trailer for the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World has since been shown. The trailer shows Sam alongside returning characters such as Nick Fury and Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. The trailer also shows that Harrison Ford is taking over the role of Ross after the unfortunate passing of William Hurt.

As with many times the torch is passed, it is called into question by fans if the new bearer can match up to the old one. Steve Rogers certainly set the bar high, crawling up from the bottom of the social ladder who was declared unfit to serve in the military, to becoming a superhero soldier who played a major role in every Avengers movie, had his own trilogy, and been mentioned or had cameos in many other films within the MCU. He has had more screen time than the vast majority of characters, and become one of the most iconic heroes, even being one of Marvel’s ‘big 3’ alongside Ironman and Thor. He certainly became iconic, as is so recognizable that even non-Marvel fans instantly recognize him.
Steve certainly left big shoes for Sam to fill, so it’s understandable that fans might think that it might not be the same without him. To the uninitiated, a fourth Captain America movie might make it seem like it’s still starring the same character. This might understandably upset some fans, as they feel Sam might be stealing some of Steve’s spotlight. Others might think that Sam should have a completely different title, such as Captain Falcon (the internet will lose it if he was called that and he punched someone really well). Others simply believe that Steve is so iconic in the role, that no matter how good Sam is, he can’t carry that mantle. These are all understandable points of view, as Steve is who most people think of when they hear the name ‘Captain America’. They think it will not be ‘the same’ without Steve at the helm.
In a way, they are right. Steve brought a number of unique traits to the role. His military background, sympathetic rise to power, and selfless nature are indeed things that make his character amazing, and it won’t be the same without him. However, not being the same doesn’t mean it will be worse. Sam helped Steve fit into the modern world. He comes from a less-than-privileged background himself and met the challenge in a similar matter to Steve, and now helps many people in the same situation he grew up in. The two also share many great traits: leadership, bravery, charisma, and hard work.
So, people concerned it won’t be the same without Steve are right in one way, but the ultimate worry is a non-issue. No, it won’t be the same, but that doesn’t mean it’ll have anything wrong with it, and yes, it can ‘work’ without him. Same as how Kate Bishop can be Hawkeye, and while it’s not the same as Clint, it can still work.
