Who Is Nubs?
Young Jedi Adventures was the first Star Wars show set during the High Republic era. This era is 200 years before the events of the prequels. The show follows three younglings, who undergo their various training, to advance within the Jedi order.
The show is aimed at young children, so there’s always a lesson to be learned in the episode. One of the cutest characters to come out of this is a little blue furball named Nubs. This little guy has become a fan favorite within the Star Wars community, but who exactly is he?
RELATED:
Nubs is a Pooba male. His home world is the planet of Myllnaab. The Jedi Order took in Nubs at a young age. He met and later became inseparable with fellow Jedi Initiates Lys Solay and Kai Brightstar.
They formed a trio of friends who worked together to face their problems. After some training on Coruscant, they were assigned to Tenoo, a planet within the Outer Rim. The ship they boarded, the Crimson Firehawk to Tenoo, was piloted by Nash Durango and her droid RJ-83. She goes on to help the Younglings on their various missions.
Nubs and his fellow younglings experience during their training. They face off against pirates Nubs faced off against one of the pirate crew alone, where he was pelted with various foods, including noodles, which Nubs did not hesitate to eat when he fell on his back. The younglings struggle to stop the pirates, but are eventually successful, with Nubs inquiring about eating after being welcomed to their new home. Later, Jedi Master Yoda contacted the Younglings and had a new task: acquiring some sparkle-fire seeds to prepare for the Kublop Springs Festival. After getting the seeds, Nubs tried to eat them, they left the seeds on the Firehawk, after getting a distress call. It was a ruse, so Val Dorn could ransack the ship and steal the seeds. Of course, since this is a children’s show, they get the seeds back, and return them to Yoda, just in time for the festival.
While he doesn’t talk, he does make some cute noises and is voiced by none other than Dee Bradley Baker. When it came to Nubs, however, there were a few things he had to do differently.
Since Nubs isn’t human, he doesn’t speak Basic, and subtitles were off the table because it is a children's show, so he improvised lines and recorded multiple options for each line, so kids could easily figure out what Nubs was saying. Baker says he plays Nubs with innocence and a sense of some cluelessness. Even though he is still a child stepping into an unfamiliar universe, he approaches everything with an optimistic and cheerful spirit.
Nubs was also seen in the most recent Lego Star Wars: Rebuild The Galaxy, where he was called “Darth Nubs’. The show is non-canon, but is fun to see what could’ve happened. In this case, the Sith would’ve found and taken Nubs instead, and he would be trained in the way of the Dark Side, and become quite a powerful Sith Lord.
Nubs is an adorable addition to the Star Wars universe and is someone that both children and adults adore. Hopefully, Young Jedi Adventures continues for a long time, so we can see how Nubs grows into a full-fledged Jedi.
