A 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' Sequel Series Could Soon Be In Production
“In every generation, there is a Chosen One. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness. She is the Slayer.”
With those iconic lines, a legendary series entitled Buffy The Vampire Slayer was born, based on an early 1990s film of the same name starring Kristy Swanson as Buffy, with supporting co-stars Rutger Hauer, Donald Sutherland, Luke Perry, and Paul Reubens. The Joss Whedon-created series, which aired for seven seasons from 1997-2003, featured teenager Buffy Summers (portrayed in the series by Sarah Michelle Gellar) slaying countless vampires, demons, goddesses, and other malevolent beings on top of the infamous demon-spawning “Hellmouth” in Sunnydale, California every week with the help of her friends, Xander, Willow, as well as other assorted supporting characters.
The series would become the backbone of a larger “universe” (aka “Whedonverse”) of series created by Joss Whedon that also included the Buffy spinoff series Angel and sci-fi-oriented series such as Firefly and Dollhouse featuring some of the same cast members and, in the case of Angel, some of the same characters. Buffy the Vampire Slayer wrapped up with its seventh season in 2003, and its occasionally intersecting spin-off series, Angel, subsequently wrapped up in 2005. Since then, the respective series have continued in a limited form with tie-in novels, audio dramas, comics, graphic novels, and even a failed animated spin-off, but, as with most series, the cast and crew moved on to other projects and there have been no more live-action adventures since they ended two decades ago. However, given the current trend of television networks and streaming services reviving long-dormant series such as Roseanne, The X-Files, and others, it appears that Buffy The Vampire Slayer may be the next major series to receive a belated continuation as well.

Hulu, along with 20th Television (an arm of 20th Century Fox) and Searchlight TV, is said to be producing the untitled sequel series, and it is expected to feature Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her role as “Buffy Summers”, the titular vampire slayer from the original series. However, due to her age (47), her character is expected to take more of a backseat role to a younger, as-yet-defined slayer character. The show will be executive produced by Gellar, along with Dolly Parton (yes, THAT Dolly Parton) and Gail Berman, both of who executive produced the original series. Nora and Lila Zuckerman would also serve as writers and showrunners for the series. Joss Whedon, the creator of the original series, dogged by accusations of on-stage misconduct from former Buffy co-stars since 2021, is not expected to be involved with the series in any way.
Gellar, who previously dashed fans’ hopes for a revival series in 2023, is excited for the opportunity to be involved in the series but she also still feels that the original series, which ended with multiple slayers from across the world becoming “activated,” thus relieving Buffy of the sole burden of being “the chosen one,” nicely wrapped up the original series’ storyline.
“But I’m happy with how we ended things. I love playing her and I feel proud of what she stood for – what she still stands for.”
As of right now, details about the proposed sequel series are scarce, but additional details will be made available as the project advances.
