Have you ever wanted to immerse yourself in the world of Middle-earth?  With the sandbox game Minecraft, it’s possible! Minecraft Middle-earth, also known as MCME, is a build-focused, fan-owned server that has been active for well over a decade and is still going strong. From well-known locations to lesser-known structures, there’s plenty to explore, with room to add your own contributions as well.

As the server’s website states, you “start as an Adventurer in Bilbo and Frodo Baggins’ home of Bag End.” From here, you have a fair bit of freedom; you can explore what has already been built, hone your craft in practice building plots, and take on an official building project with supervision. With how far Minecraft has come since its prototype version released in 2009, from block types to texture changes, players can create much more detailed, extensive builds. MCME welcomes players to a blockier version of Middle-earth, giving fans an in-depth outlet to explore what others have made and contribute their own interpretations of Tolkien’s world.

MCME was started on October 10, 2010, just over a year before the full release of Minecraft. The map size is 29 thousand by 30 thousand blocks, making its real-world size equivalent to a large major city like Fort Worth, Texas. It is not officially endorsed by Mojang or the Tolkien Estate. The world is only available as a server, there is no official map download. Information about how to join the server can be found here; note that this server is currently available in Java Edition only.
