A new Dungeons & Dragons series is in the works at Netflix. Taking its name from one of the most popular settings in over 50 years of Dungeons & Dragons gaming, the series will be titled The Forgotten Realms. Drew Crevello is taking the roles of showrunner and writer. Reportedly, Crevello has finished writing the pilot episode. He was also previously attached to the development of a Paramount+ D&D series, but that was shelved last spring.
Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast will be attached to the project as well. Shawn Levy, writer and director of Deadpool & Wolverine and producer and director for Stranger Things, and Dan Levine will executive produce with 21 Laps Entertainment.
The Forgotten Realms banner of Dungeons & Dragons lore includes dozens of novels by numerous authors, including R.A. Salvatore and Ed Greenwood, as well as video games like Pool of Radiance, Neverwinter Nights, and, of course, the Baldur’s Gate series. This new series is not known to be related to any other media at this time, including the 2023 film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
If this project does take off as planned, it would be a relief after several missed opportunities for the franchise. The last time that was a dedicated Dungeons & Dragons show was the 1983 cartoon on CBS. It seems possible that Netflix could use this live-action series as the jumping-off point for a whole D&D universe, especially if the success of Stranger Things is any indication for the streaming giant.
