Marvel Rivals has taken the gaming scene by storm, quickly seeming to overshadow games like Overwatch and the like. The deserved popularity has led to a bevy of information about how the game is going to progress, with new heroes coming every half-season. This upcoming half-season update will see the introduction of The Thing and Johnny Storm (AKA The Human Torch).

It also was going to seemingly come with a rank reset. And boy, did that ever rankle players.

The backlash was swift, with players voicing their anger on social media and Discord servers. It was strong enough that NetEase has since rescinded the decision, allowing rank resets only at the end of full seasons, not during their proposed half-season.

They posted in a blog that the proposed reset was found to be putting too much pressure on players to constantly have to regain their rank every 6-7 weeks, which would make competitive play too stressful and not as much fun for players. Players expressed their frustration that this wouldn’t allow any time to get used to a role and rank before the ranks reset. It’s no easy grind to get to Grand Master, and that’s especially true for players who don’t have all the time in the world to play all day, every day.

The reversal was met with a warm reception, especially in an industry that doesn’t have a great track record of listening to fan feedback. It’s a lesson that other developers have shown to be effective, like Arrowhead and their game Helldivers 2, but other companies don’t seem to have yet figured out how best to use feedback.

NetEase’s update comes next Friday, February 21, with the aforementioned additions to the roster and a series of balance updates.
