There are always things to find hidden in visual media. These Easter Eggs can be things that are fairly obvious or tucked away to remain hidden for many years. And then there are those hidden in plain sight that can be overlooked. This new Easter Egg found in The Phantom Menace is one of those. An Easter Egg is inserted into the Battle of Theed in one of the hallways of the palace.

Matte paintings were used a lot to help expand the scenery that was shown. One of those people working on such matte paintings at Industrial Light & Magic was Caroleen Green. Working on enhancing Theed Palace through the use of matte paintings to make it appear larger than the set actually was, Green found the perfect place to insert a picture of Star Wars creator George Lucas. The story of which she revealed to Clayton Sandell.

On the archway of one of the palace hallways, an empty space existed that looked like a plaque. From Green herself, “I decided to get a picture of George, and I put it on this plaque. I thought, ‘Well, that’ll be cool. By the time you shrink that down, his face is just a blur.’” In showing one of her supervisors what she had done, that supervisor said it would need Lucas’s approval.

With Lucas brought in to view his cameo in the matte painting, Green recalls that moment. “George is really quiet. He looks at it, and he goes, ‘Oh, naughty, naughty.’ I said, ‘Yeah, but it’s you! It’s your face.’ And then there’s silence again. And I’m just sitting there with everybody. And for some reason, I can’t describe the feeling, but – I knew that I wasn’t going to get in trouble.” And she didn’t, as Lucas said to leave it in.

Though difficult to tell without really zooming into the scene in question (at around 1 hour 58 minutes into The Phantom Menace), there is certainly a distinct similarity to Lucas within that plaque at the apex of the archway. With this finding, what once was just rumour is now reality.
