After nearly eight years, The Elder Scrolls Online is still going strong. After some bumps in the road early on (pretty common for new MMO launches), the game has hit its stride and is enjoying widespread success. Access to the game continued to expand when it was made free-to-play, and even further when Microsoft acquired Bethesda, bringing ESO into the Xbox Game Pass fold.

Yesterday, Bethesda was featured during Microsoft’s Developers Direct, and they revealed the next chapter for the hit MMO: Necrom. In the last chapter, High Isle, players took to the seas and to the island of High Isle, the home of the Bretons. This time, players will journey back to a realm that hasn’t been visited in over 30 years: eastern Morrowind on the Telvanni Peninsula. Developers stated that players haven’t been to this part of Tamriel since before Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, in 1994. The name Necrom is that of the central hub city of the new realm, the famed City of the Dead for the Dunmer, or Dark Elves.

The story in this new chapter involves the Daedric Prince Hermaeus Mora, who resides in the Daedric plane of Apocrypha, which players will now be able to visit. It should be familiar to players of Skyrim’s DLC Dragonborn, and it is the famed realm of secret knowledge. Hermaeus Mora needs players’ help in stopping a threat to all realms. In keeping with this theme of forbidden knowledge, Bethesda revealed the newest class, and only the third to be released since launch of the game: the Arcanist. This new class offers a new way to play for veteran ESO players, featuring a new combo point system that utilizes two skill types: one that builds up points, and another that uses them. This allows for experimentation with the most effective combinations of these skills.

Finally, the developers revealed that the second half of the year will focus on quality of life updates and fixes. Following that, at the end of the year, they’re not going with new dungeons — even though there will be a new Trial (Raid) — but instead making major game changes. They cryptically asked if fans would like an endless dungeon that can be run with a friend.

Initial fan reactions seem to be on the positive side, especially since a new class was one of the most common player requests.
