While Star Wars has enjoyed a resurgence with a variety of shows like Andor, Ashoka, and The Mandalorian, this summer fans will have a chance to return to the beginning. On June 12, the British Film Institute (BFI) will present George Lucas’ original version of A New Hope at their Film on Film Festival. The movie will be shown in a dye transfer IB technicolor print. Aside from the film, attendees will have the chance to view script annotations, the original continuity script, on-set Polaroids, and deleted scenes. According to the BFI, the festival is a “celebration of the medium of ‘film’ itself, where every film, without exception, is projected from a print.” The official literature reads, “The festival provides a unique, cinematic experience that enables audiences to enjoy film in all its glory, exploring its aesthetics and celebrating the skills required to work with it.”
The festival will close with a showing of the Twin Peaks pilot to celebrate its 35th anniversary. James Bell, the Program Director of the festival explained its purpose. He said, “Every print in the program is a unique object, with its own life story, and they all bear their scars with pride. They put us at touching distance to the past, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience them all.” The Film on Film Festival is a unique chance for fans to engage in the history of the franchise and appreciate all the media that grew out of the original.
