Broadcast TV Was Resilient In 2024 Despite Production Declines
Luminate Data’s 2024 report on film and television is in, and the results were fairly interesting. The statistics in general were going to be impacted by the Hollywood writer and actor strikes of 2023; these strikes halted production across the board while contract terms were negotiated. Once the strikes were settled and agreements were made, broadcast television had a better rebound than cable and streaming services. Broadcast T.V. refers to free channels whose content is carried over public airwaves, such as CBS, NBC, The CW, and Fox. According to Luminate (via Deadline), these stations saw a content output increase of 25% as they resumed production business promptly.
Streaming and cable had a comparably worse time. Original cable productions dropped 15% compared to 2023. Streaming platforms are also down, with Netflix alone putting out 22% less U.S.-based content than in pre-strike years. The trend of creating seasons with a small number of episodes ordered has seemingly contributed to the decline; with less content being ordered, less content is outputted.
