Dabney Coleman, TV And Movie Actor, Passes Away At 92

Acting icon Dabney Coleman, known for a variety of roles from Stuart Little (1999) to an episode of Yellowstone, passed away on May 16, 2024.  At the time of writing, the cause of death has not been released.  The actor passed away in his Santa Monica home.  He was 92.

Coleman was born on January 3, 1932, in Austin, Texas.  The actor attended the Virginia Military Institute and later studied at the University of Texas, Austin campus.  In 1953, he was drafted into the U.S. Army’s Special Services Division for several years as well, serving in Germany.  After finding a passion for acting, Coleman began studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in 1958.

Coleman had a long, varied acting career with credits going back to the early 60s.  Some of his most prominent roles include Merle Jeeter in Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Slap Maxwell in The Slap Maxwell Story, Commodore Louis Kaestner in Boardwalk Empire, the mayor in the animated kids show Pound Puppies, and John Dutton Sr. in Yellowstone.  Coleman also played sexist boss Franklin Hart in 9 to 5 (1980); this film was Dolly Parton’s theatrical debut.  He wasn’t involved in only TV shows and movies: the actor was featured in the music video for “Star Maps” by Aly & AJ.

The actor won several awards throughout his career.  He received the 1987 Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Series for his role in The Slap Maxwell Story.  He received the 1987 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Special for his role in Sworn to Silence.  Coleman won the Mary Pickford Award at the 2010 Satellite Awards for his overall artistic contributions.  The actor was also honored with the rest of the cast of Boardwalk in the 2010 and 2011 Screen Actors Guild Awards.  He got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2014.

Coleman’s presence and impact on the industry will echo for years to come.  The actor is survived by his children, Quincy, Kelly, Meghan, and Randy, as well as five grandchildren.  We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.  In this time of grieving, remember to respect the family’s privacy.
