Marvel’s The Defenders, which includes a motley assortment of Marvel Comics characters such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher, may be integrated into the larger MCU after previously having one or more seasons of their series. At least one of these series, which originally aired on Netflix, Daredevil, is already officially making that transition, with the upcoming release of Daredevil: Born Again, along with most of the original cast and set after the events of the original Netflix series. A second season of the series has already been greenlit and is expected to start filming soon.
Starting in 2013, Marvel teamed up with Netflix to launch a franchise of Marvel TV series. The first series, Daredevil, starring Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, ran for three seasons from 2015-2018. It was followed by three seasons of Jessica Jones (2015-2019), starring Kyrsten Ritter and Doctor Who’s David Tennant. Luke Cage, starring Mike Colter, ran for two seasons from 2016-2018, Iron Fist, starring Game of Thrones’ Finn Jones, ran for two seasons from 2017-2018, and finally, The Punisher ran for two seasons from 2017-2019. Additionally, Marvel’s Defenders TV miniseries ran for one season in 2017, featuring all of the aforementioned characters together a la Marvel’s The Avengers film series.

Marvel began canceling these series in 2018 due to the upcoming launch of D+, where all of the previous series can now be found. Through its other Marvel series, Marvel has already been steadily integrating characters from Daredevil into the MCU proper. Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin has already made appearances in the Hawkeye series, and Charlie Cox appeared in the last Tom Holland Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). There have also been appearances of Daredevil-related characters in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law (2022) and Echo (2024).
Are Marvel’s other Defenders joining the MCU anytime soon? Well, let us just say that Marvel producers are keeping it in mind according to Brad Winderbaum, the current head of Marvel’s streaming, television, and animation:
“I can't say much, but I'll tell you that it's so exciting to be able to play in that sandbox,” Winderbaum says. “Obviously we don't have the unlimited storytelling resources like a comic book. If you can draw it, you can do it. It's dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television. But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring."
Daredevil: Born Again is set to premiere soon exclusively on Disney+ on March 4, 2025. Be sure to check out the final official trailer here:
