Christopher Nolan is diving in with both feet with his next film, The Odyssey, written by the Greek poet Homer. The official first-look image of Matt Damon, who is in full armor as the travel-beaten Odysseus, was released on the film’s X account. The photo confirms the biggest rumor of the film as to which Hollywood actor will portray the gut-wrenched Greek warrior.

This film marks the third team-up between the director and actor from Interstellar and Oppenheimer, which deliver unforgettable performances. However, Damon was a supporting cast member in those productions, so fans are eager to see how the Jason Bourne star will carry a film for such an epic filmmaker.

Universal Pictures hyped up the film in a statement, calling it “a mythic action epic shot worldwide using brand new IMAX film technology. " This approach is in keeping with Nolan's approach to his films.

For anyone needing a refresher on Homer’s The Odyssey, the story follows Odysseus as he battles his way home from the Trojan War. The beleaguered warrior has to battle gods who put tricks in his path, monsters who try to devour him, and his pride, making things much tougher than they need to be.

As far as the rest of the cast list, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson are confirmed to be a part of the effort, with new cast members being announced almost every day!

The Odyssey opens worldwide on July 17, 2026
